Portland, Maine, the state’s largest city, was founded in 1632 on Casco Bay and quickly flourished as a shipbuilding centre. Pine from inland forests was exported for use as ship masts, and wooden wharves lined the seafront. While some have made way for modern development, Customs House Wharf still retains its original character.
