About Newport, Rhode Island

Founded in 1639 by religious dissenters seeking freedom, Newport quickly grew into a thriving colonial port thanks to its deepwater harbour at Narragansett Bay. The city’s rich history is reflected in its many well-preserved landmarks, including the 17th-century Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House and White Horse Tavern, as well as 18th-century gems like Trinity Church, Touro Synagogue, the Colony House, and the Redwood Library. During the American Revolutionary War, British occupation from 1776 to 1779 forced many residents to flee, ending Newport’s golden age but preserving much of its architecture. By the mid-19th century, Newport became a summer retreat for America’s wealthy elite, who built grand mansions along Bellevue Avenue—known as “summer cottages”—with families like the Vanderbilts and Astors calling them home. Newport is also famous for hosting the America’s Cup yacht races from 1930 until 1983. Today, visitors can enjoy its charming streets, beaches, seafood restaurants, galleries, and vibrant cultural scene.
