About Kagoshima

Kagoshima city, the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture, is Kyushu’s southernmost major city. Often likened to its Italian sister city, Naples, Kagoshima shares a mild climate and the presence of an active volcano—Sakurajima. This famous volcano, one of the most renowned active volcanoes not only in Japan but worldwide, sits dramatically in the centre of Kinko Bay and is a proud symbol of the region. Once an island, Sakurajima became connected to the Osumi Peninsula after a major eruption in 1914. Depending on the weather, you might see smoke rising from its summit. Beyond Sakurajima’s striking landscape, the elegant Sengan-en Garden offers a peaceful retreat.
