About Belfast
Before becoming Northern Ireland’s capital, Belfast was a modest village called Béal Feirste—“sandbank ford”—belonging to the O'Neill clan of Ulster. The 1600s brought English and Scottish settlers, and Sir Arthur Chichester from Devon was granted the land by the Crown.
