About IJmuiden
IJmuiden, known as North Holland’s ‘Gate to the North Sea,’ boasts four harbours: Vissershaven, Haringhaven, IJmondhaven, and the Seaport Marina, which welcomes pleasure craft. As the largest fishing port in the Netherlands, IJmuiden is a relatively young town, having developed in the 1870s following the opening of the North Sea Canal. During World War II, much of the town was destroyed by the German Navy, who constructed large concrete bunkers for their torpedo boats and submarines. After 1945, architect Willem Marinus Dudok redesigned the town, creating its most striking building, the Stadhuis van Velsen, which now houses local government offices. For cruise passengers, IJmuiden serves as the gateway to Amsterdam, the Dutch capital renowned for its elegant canals, historic gabled houses, and world-class art museums. Please note that complimentary shuttle buses from the port take you only to IJmuiden town centre, not Amsterdam itself.
