About Kanazawa

Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, was once a cultural rival to Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). Remarkably, it escaped damage during World War II, allowing many of its historic districts to remain beautifully preserved. The city is renowned for Kenrokuen Garden, located beside Kanazawa Castle. Kenrokuen is considered one of Japan’s three finest gardens, spanning 11.4 hectares and featuring an artificial pond, gentle hills, and scattered teahouses. It is home to Japan’s oldest fountain powered by natural water pressure and a tea house dating back to 1774. Nearby is the Higashi Chaya Gai Geisha District, designated a National Cultural Asset and the largest of Kanazawa’s Geisha quarters. Many of its buildings still serve as Geisha houses, with traditional shops lining the streets, creating a charming, nostalgic atmosphere. Kanazawa is also famed for its exquisite lacquerware, Kutani pottery, gold leaf craftsmanship, and finely painted silk kimonos.
