About Ålesund
The coastal town of Ålesund is the commercial hub of Norway’s Møre og Romsdal district, but it is best known for its stunning Jugendstil (Art Nouveau) architecture, which many consider to make it one of Norway’s most beautiful towns. This distinctive style emerged after a catastrophic fire in 1904 destroyed nearly 800 buildings and left 10,000 residents homeless. Rebuilding began soon after, aided by young architects—many from abroad—who blended German Jugendstil with Nordic and Viking influences. The result is a fairy-tale townscape of narrow streets lined with ornate buildings, their façades adorned with turrets, spires, dragonheads and decorative flourishes. One of the world’s few remaining Art Nouveau towns, Ålesund was recognised in 1998 with the Houens National Memorial Prize for preserving its architectural heritage.
